Rendered Invisible: Solo Exhibition at The Art House, Wakefield
Fiona Grady's solo exhibition Rendered Invisible displays artworks made during her artist residency at The Art Station in Wakefield. Over the month long period Grady created a series of new vinyl window installations, handmade slide projections, egg tempera wall drawings, blind embossed prints and laser etched studies on mount board.
As artist in residence, Fiona Grady's aim was to experiment with various projection methods to create her own analogue slides. Her images are composed from changing lines or blocks of colour that reflect elements of the physical prints and drawings, layering over them; blurring what is physically and digitally present.
Sourcing secondhand slide projectors during her stay in West Yorkshire, she designed her own slides that acted as a source of light. Her drawings were painted directly onto walls with handmade egg tempera paint and hand cut vinyl applied to windows around The Art House. The vinyl artworks filtered light forming coloured shadows that stretched along the spaces they were situated within and positioned in key points of activation. They mimicked the way light passes throughout the day, at times brightening the drawings until they become invisible. At the core she invites new dialogues with the static shapes.
The resulting exhibition, Rendered Invisible is an exploration into the 3D potential of drawing. Grady has created an ambient series of wall drawing and print based installations formed from layers of screenprints on translucent paper and embossed monoprints that suggest movement of shadows and blocks of light. These pieces are illuminated by projections: they are a moving collage of light and colour; that invite the viewer to acclimatise to their environment and consider the subtleties of the work. She often use unconventional locations for her artworks such as corridors, stairwells, corners of a room and shop front windows. She is interested to find out how the placement of an artwork will invite different narratives - dictated by its setting.
