Fran Williams spoke to the team at DLA Architecture for the Architects' Journals FIRST LOOK feature. The article shares an insight into the two phase housing development for the YMCA Wimbledon for which Fiona Grady was a collaborator:
Phase 1's façade features arches inspired by blending Italian loggias with forms from Wimbledon's surrounding context. Drawing from the vertical rhythm of nearby shopping parades, the design incorporates a gentle overhang and double-height colonnade. Terracotta brick was chosen to contrast with Wimbledon's Broadway. DLA collaborated with local artist Fiona Grady to create abstract geometric patterns inspired by nature - incorporated into horizontal elements and perforated panels of the rooms.
A new public realm and play space link the series of new residential buildings that step down from nine storeys to seven, six and five storeys. The buildings feature extensive green roofs and bird and bat boxes. YMCA St Paul's Group is a provider of youth and community services and one of London's largest providers of specialist supported housing.
