In May, Fiona spent a few days as Artist in Residence at Derix Glass Studios in Taunusstein, Germany. During the residency Fiona collaborated with their expert team to design two panels using unique handblown coloured glass. This specialist product is created by their partners Lamberts Glass in North Germany.
While visiting the studio Fiona created a series of designs to exploit the character of the glass sheets. She turned two of her drawings into hand cut masking film stencils and worked with the glass technicians' reduction method to acid-etch the glass and create layered tones of transparent colour. The unusual properties of the glass sheets allow them to be acid-etched to lighten or remove the colour to create a variety of tones within one panel. Resulting in refined cut lines and varied intensities of colour. The pieces really have to been seen in person to fully appreciate the beauty of the delicate materials! The final designs are now available to see at Fiona's studio in London.
