Fiona Grady was artist in residence at the Mark Rothko Art Centre in Daugavpils, Latvia; based in a former fortress and that is undergoing regeneration since the end of Soviet occupation. During the residency she made a series of works in the art centre and neighbourhood. In the nearby Engineers' Arsenal, an abandoned building that mirrors the architecture of the Rothko Centre, Grady created interventions using lighting gel films, placing folded pieces over the wooden window frames. The resulting work was a series of photographs and time-lapse films of the gels blowing in the wind while daylight circulates through the rooms. She also filmed in the abandoned buildings to capture the beauty of the dilapidated sites; these films are currently being developed into an animation project.
