Fiona Grady was invited by Nightingale Projects to design a series of murals for a residential patient ward at Vincent Square Eating Disorder Service in Chelsea, London. She worked in close consultation with the staff and patients of the ward to design a sensitive colour scheme and balance of shapes to create an uplifting environment. Her commission "Rounding the Corner" uses a series of warming colours that pick up on tones from nature including 'dewy lawn' green, 'california days' yellow and 'first dawn' blue that work in harmony. The blocks of colour smoothly transition from one tone to another through the curved edges of the shapes - this soft details creates musicality that resonates between each section of the ward. Alongside the murals, Grady has created a vinyl installation for the windows of the patients' lounge.
Her murals are displayed in tangent with a series of framed Quentin Blake illustrations which he also made for the especially for the patients. Grady grew up with Blake's work so it has been a lovely opportunity to spend time considering his work and use of colour when making her designs. The specialised unit provides care to individuals going through an extremely challenging period in their life so it is important to moves away from the clinical white walls of hospitals to create a calming and restorative space. The combination of the conversation between Blake's prints and Grady's installations activates the ward with the aim to offer a feeling of hope to people who spend time there.
Thank you to Dulux for their generous support of the project.
