The curators of the MK Calling exhibition invited artists to explore their connections with Milton Keynes and the surrounding area. For the exhibition, Fiona Grady created Scattered Memories a site-specific installation in one of the large windows at the spectacularly renovated and extended MK Gallery; designed by the renowned 6a architects.
Scattered Memories was inspired by a visit to the nearby top-secret home of the World War Two codebreakers, Bletchley Park. Grady explains:
"My grandmother worked in Hut 6 in the final years of the war; she never discussed this with the family and she passed away before it was socially acceptable to reveal her experiences. It was important for me to visit the site where she worked to try to imagine her life there during the war." Grady was drawn to the tape crosses on the windows of the huts that protect them from shattering in blasts. Her installation Scattered Memories is inspired by these 'x' shapes, with the crosses evoking of a fragile period of time.
