Fiona Grady collaborated with painter Charley Peters to create the artwork A Line Up of X's which is composed of 14 large suspended perspex crosses stretching across a series of empty windows. The textured pattern of laser cut 'X' shapes is taken from photographic details of the floor and wall textures in the disused former Tate & Lyle factory. The photographs were digitally treated with a gradient fade and printed onto vinyl backings for the 'X's. The striking floating shapes in the north facing windows were illuminated by the soft autumn light. The rainbow of textures of the rough peeling wall paint, gravel floor, and metal shutters are superimposed on the shapes and heightened by the grubby windows through which you can see Tate & Lyle's new premises looming in the background.
The artwork was made for The Factory Project - an independent museum-scale exhibition, showcasing the work of 10 curatorial partners and over 110 artists organised by Thorp Stavri during Frieze week October 2021.
